Baby Boomers:

Were you born between 1946 and 1964? Then you are considered a Baby Boomer. Some of us boomers are rapidly approaching the age of sixty, and because you are reading this while in the ‘gym’ does not mean you cannot use a little advise when it comes to health and fitness.

It is important to understand that with age comes a loss of flexibility and lengthened recovery times.  Joints have less lubrication and the elasticity of muscles, tendons and ligaments diminishes with time and needs to be taken into account. The fact is the older you get, the weaker your body becomes.

Most adults over age 45 should start to experience a decrease in muscle size, strength and recovery time. However, there is a way to fight off old father time. Simply follow a good exercise routine, eat wisely and you can slow down this process.

So here goes…

Never jump into daily physical fitness and exercising from a prolonged state of inactivity, you could be doing much greater damage than good, start slowly.

Do 7-10 minutes of light cardio before workouts to get the blood flowing through the body. Allow 1 to 2 minute rest periods between each demanding set. Be sure to stretch after workouts.

Getting the proper training advice will also improve the efficiency of your physical training program.

Also there are many new programs and physical activities that are designed and ideal for the more senior of us. Take activities like Yoga that have many physical benefits for senior health, and are readily available at Club West Island these activities come with certified professional instructors to guide you through the classes.

I myself am an “advanced” baby boomer. I can attest to the fact that regular exercise pays off. I attained my black belt in Karate at age 47 and continue to prove that I can still do exercises that many half my age struggles with, such as 30 chin ups!

Make sure you listen to your body, as it will give the signs and indications of its limits. You will be sore, and that is a good thing. If you are in pain that is not. As you get used to daily or regular exercise the sore feeling will shrink. This initial sore period can be as short as a couple of weeks.

So in closing do not be afraid of Father Time, show him that you are in control of your destiny keep up a good exercise routine and live a long and healthy life.
